Midwest Ambulance staffs a full-time in-house education department. The education department has been established to provide up-to-date continuing education for both the employees of Midwest Ambulance Service, and our contracted facilities. The education department accomplishes this through a number of means:
Continuing Education Programs
Midwest Ambulance Service-Grinnell division conducts two formal continuing education classes every month. These classes are conducted the first Thursday of the month at 8:00 am. Each program is conducted at the Grinnell fire department, and the annual goal is to complete the 48 hours of continuing education required by the national registry, and the state of Iowa. All EMS providers are welcome to attend this training at no cost to the student.
The Des Moines division conducts more formal continuing education on a regular basis. These classes are scheduled multiple times on a recurring basis.
Certification Programs
In order to ensure that our crew members are meeting the current healthcare guidelines several certification programs are in place.
CPR The education department has invested time, money, and energy in updating to the 2005 ECC guidelines for CPR. We currently are offering classes to all of our contracted facilities. Please call for more information or to schedule a class.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life support) Midwest Ambulance Service offers annual in-house ACLS classes. These classes are in line with the latest guidelines, and take advantage of our newly acquired STAT PDA driven simulator.
NRP In order to better serve our connection with the Neonatal Transport Team of Blank Children’s Hospital, Midwest Ambulance Service crews are often in attendance at both in-house, and out of house classes.
PALS In order to better serve our pediatric clients Midwest Ambulance Service crews are often in attendance at both in-house, and out of house PALS classes.
New Employee Orientation
Every new employee to Midwest Ambulance Service receives an intensive orientation. This 20 hour course helps provide the framework necessary to function effectively as an EMT or Paramedic within our operations.
Orientation includes Company policies and procedures Sexual harassment HIPPA training and policy review Infection control EMS ergonomics Equipment operations Patient care protocols with exam Patient care documentation standards City orientation course including map exercise Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator
